Textile Craft Sample 12 blog. |
9am today we started putting the show up!
We’ve been sent away now until 1 while the tutors move things around and properly curate the space. Here’s some initial shots of people putting things together.
Short film showing experimentation in porcelain. This is not traditional porcelain and is hand-made, offering the ability to be remoulded for a little while before beginning to set. The film shows a quick experimentation with form before I settled on a design. I find it helpful to do these quick mock-ups to get a feel for the type of look I want to create. I turned to porcelain in my practice as an alternative to traditional textile materials and felt the combination with laser cutting and stitch could produce a contemporary feel, though at this point I needed to experiment and push this concept further.
Sample 12 Exhibition, Textile Crafts Degree Show, University of Huddersfield
The Technology Building, University of Huddersfield, Queensgate, Huddersfield from 16th – 22nd June 2012
You are invited to come and see the result of three years of hard work at this year’s Sample Degree Show, a professional exhibition to showcase the work from the final year Textile Craft students of 2012. As well as the free exhibition, there will also be a number of free textile crafts based workshops and a prize draw, giving you the chance to win students work among other prizes from our sponsors.
Sample 12 is the annual degree show, with accompanying catalogue, for Textile Craft (BA Hons) at the University of Huddersfield. The exhibition features work from all final year students, which encompasses areas of art, design and product, in the disciplines of knit, weave, print and embroidery. While at the exhibition you can also pick up a copy of the Sample 12 catalogue. The catalogue is designed by graphic design students, in collaboration with the textile craft students. It has been professionally printed and bound, and it features high quality photographs of work from most of the artists and designers featured in the show, taken by photographer Andrew Farrington.
The student led workshops that run alongside the exhibition are suitable for all ages and skill levels, whether you are a knitting nanny or completely new to all things crafts. They will cover a range of textile craft techniques such as knitting, crochet, braiding and weaving. Best of all they are free of charge, and all the materials will be provided - all you will need to bring is an imagination!
Exact classes, times and dates will be confirmed closer to the time so please keep an eye on our blogs for more information.

Following on from the first term, I considered a way of producing the tube-like structures I had started to play with. The paper experiments, while I liked the effect, didn’t feel refined enough for what I wanted to achieve. I instead began to play with a type of cold porcelain that I could make and set at home using my microwave. I initially had a lot of problems in getting the paste to hold a round three-dimensional form, some collapsed, others became too thin and tore, but eventually I found away to create the shape I wanted. This was done by rolling out the paste and wrapping in sheets around paper tubes for a short while until starting to dry. The pieces are then removed and cut to size before completely drying. It is important to remove the pieces as the paste shrinks slightly as it dries and becomes impossible to remove. I drilled each section and stitched them into a doubled organza. I then began to play with colouring. I had originally put coloured bands in the base of my paper tubes to produce a coloured glow when lit. Here I have filled in the centres with a steel organdy allowing loose threads to be exposed to test the concept of working in neutral/white tones with subtle touches of colour.
What’s been going on in the studio lately: These are Julie Nixon and Leigh Bowser’s studio spaces.
Julie is focusing on themes of Britishness and taxidermy as inspiration to create an entirely British car interior. Not scared to get involved she has been teaching herself taxidermy techniques: pickling, skinning and preserving road kill she’s found herself.
Leigh is working on The Blood Bag Project, inspiring people to donate blood through craft techniques. She has uploaded a template for hand made textile blood bags and encouraging people to participate and make their own. So far her influence has spread as far as Australia where a year 8 class will be creating blood bags and to Dream Rocket founder Jennifer Marsh in America.
