Textile Craft Sample 12 blog. |
One of Julie Nixon’s embroidered final pieces.
What’s been going on in the studio lately: These are Julie Nixon and Leigh Bowser’s studio spaces.
Julie is focusing on themes of Britishness and taxidermy as inspiration to create an entirely British car interior. Not scared to get involved she has been teaching herself taxidermy techniques: pickling, skinning and preserving road kill she’s found herself.
Leigh is working on The Blood Bag Project, inspiring people to donate blood through craft techniques. She has uploaded a template for hand made textile blood bags and encouraging people to participate and make their own. So far her influence has spread as far as Australia where a year 8 class will be creating blood bags and to Dream Rocket founder Jennifer Marsh in America.
Julie Nixon creates work based on themes of tradition and Britishness, celebrating and recognising declining industries, icons and items while incorporating the idea of taxidermy and preservation.
